When I was given the responsibility of writing Jackson’s episode, I asked myself, what kind of story do I want to tell? What is important about Jackson that the audience needs to know? When series creator, Kelsey Jorissen, asked me to write for the character, basically her instructions were, “I trust you. Brad and Jackson are dating. Run with it!” I couldn’t be more appreciative of Kelsey for handing over her baby and giving me the freedom to explore. All I needed was to find an area of focus and I’d be good to go.
That was the dichotomy we wanted to explore with our episodes. We wanted to show Brad and Jackson living a normal everyday life as a couple, experiencing the same joys and troubles as any other relationship. We wanted to show some of the turmoil Jackson has stepping onto the scene as a gay man in 2015 and what that means, verses Brad, whose been comfortable and open with himself for years. Brad has witnessed the evolution of public perspective first hand and the changes within the gay community. They both want the same things out of their relationship, however their experience gives them a different unique approach in trying to bring out the best in one another.
